Niaspan
July 31st, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedNiaspan is a prescription medication used with diet and exercise that helps raise hdl cholesterol levels. This niaspan can reduce the risk of recurrent nonfatal myocardial infarction, slow progression of atherosclerotic disease, and for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia. It is only part of a complete program of treatment that may also include diet, exercise, weight control, and other medications. When taking niaspan, you have to follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely.
Niaspan is a perscription formulation and strength of the vitamin niacin (aka nicotinic acid or vitamin b3). Niacin can help cholesterol by increasing the amount of hdl, or good cholesterol, in the blood. As an antihyperlipidemic medication, niaspan is used with diet changes (restriction of cholesterol and fat intake) to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in the blood. Generic niaspan is also used to prevent and treat pellagra (niacin deficiency), a disease caused by inadequate diet and other medical problems.
The niaspan had undergone all the necessary clinical trials and investigations to discover and evaluate this form of niacin effects on the blood fats levels. Niaspan may not be used under normal medical supervision because it has a low risk of serious or long-term side effects. You need to check how this niaspan interacts with other drugs and diseases in your profile.
You can find the niaspan in the form of the extended-release tablets. It means that the small amounts of niacin will be released into the body of a patient during a certain period of time. Dietary supplements and vitamins containing niacin are absorbed by the body right after they are taken, which causes the significant immediate splash of niacin in the organism.
There are studies measured the additional impact of combining niaspan and simvastatin on key lipid parameters. According to AHA (American Heart Association), more than 38 million americans have complex lipid disease. The niaspan/simvastatin combination tablet may become a promising next step in effort to develop therapies that support more comprehensive cholesterol management with one pill. It is the fact that combination lipid therapies are an increasing trend to help physicians reach their patients’ treatment goals.
Do not substitute the niaspan for equivalent doses of immediate-release niacin. This niaspan must be prescribed with caution in patients who consume substantial amounts of alcohol or have apast history of liver disease. During therapy with niaspan, liver function tests should be performed on all patients.
If you are allergic to niacin, or if you have severe liver disease, a stomach ulcer, or active bleeding, do not take the niaspan. It is better not to consume alcohol when undergoing treatment with the niaspan. As too much consumption may react adversely. It is a wise action to tell your doctor before you take the niaspan.

Facts About Vitamins
July 13th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedFacts about vitamins are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. The facts about vitamins tell us that just about everyone could benefit from a daily supplement. Some people are at greater risk of vitamin deficiency, however, and should definitely include a supplement in their diet. Daily vitamin supplements can be an important part of good health, because most of us don’t get enough nutrients from our daily food.
There are some facts about vitamins you should know. Eventhough pregnant women, the elderly, anyone with an illness or injury, everyone needs to recover. To the facts about Vitamins, everybody knows that it’s important to get enough vitamins. What you have to realise is that you should be careful with the intake of supplements (of any kind). It might be possible that you suffer from an insufficiency but eating pills will not always automatically solve your problem.
Your nutritional supplement shouldn’t contain more of a nutrient than your body can absorb. It’s one of the incontrovertible facts about vitamins that more isn’t necessarily better. For instance, your digestive tract can’t absorb a day’s worth of calcium from a single tablet. Two tablets a day with a smaller dosage would be necessary.
Vitamins are vital organic compounds required by an organism for healthy survival and which cannot be synthesized by the organism itself, in sufficient quantities. Vitamin manufacturers who really know the facts about vitamins know that blending vitamins isn’t like blending cake mix. You can’t just stir the mixture from side to side.
Unfortunately there is no exact science of the facts about vitamins for determining just how much of any given vitamin, mineral, or essential nutrient anybody needs at any given time. Vitamins are essential for proper growth, development and functioning. You can ask a nutritionist and you will find that taking more then the recommended dose is not better and could actually be harmful. Another key of the facts about vitamins is that large doses of antioxidant vitamins, such as 10,000 mg of vitamin C or 3,000 IU of vitamin E every day, can alter the way your body responds to vitamins in general.
As you can see from these facts about vitamins, it is very important to get all the nutrients you need. Daily vitamin supplements are one way to make sure you do that. But, whatever be your choice or mode of vitamin intake, it is important to be aware of the different kinds of vitamins and the various functions they perform.

Coumadin Diet
June 26th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedCoumadin diet is a prescription anticoagulant medication. This coumadin works by blocking the formation of ceratin blood clotting factors. One of the downsides of this medication is that it interacts with many different foods and beverages.
Coumadin treats or prevents blood clots that may occur in the veins and lungs. Using the coumadine diet can also reduce the risk of death, recurring heart attack, or blood clotting events (e.g., stroke) after a heart attack.
There are some general dietary guidelines that you should follow while taking Coumadin. Vitamin K, for instance, large amounts of the vitamin K can counteract the benefits of warfarin. So, it is recommended that you not consume too much vitamin K, but overall, there are no foods that must absolutely be avoided with a Coumadin diet. The average recommended daily allowance of vitamin K for adult men is 120 micrograms (mcg). For adult women, it’s 90 mcg.
It is now understood that eating a consistent diet is more important. While there is no specific diet for people taking Coumadin, there are general guidelines that should be followed to help improve the safety of the medication. Even though there is no specific warfarin or Coumadin diet, certain foods and beverages can impair the effect of warfarin. For this reason, it’s important to pay attention to what you eat while taking this medication.
Millions of Americans take the coumadin diet as an anticoagulant to treat blood clots. These clots may be in the legs or lungs or may be associated with an irregular heartbeat (known as “atrial fibrillation”) or heart-valve replacement.
It is important to eat a consistent diet during treatment because sudden changes can lead to dangerous problems. The effectiveness of Coumadin diet must be monitored by your doctor through blood tests. This blood tests is also called as a PT Test, or prothrombin time. It measures the tendency of your blood to clot.

Vitamin E Overdose
June 9th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedVitamin E overdose information is a common knowledge for everyone who cares about health. Vitamin E, also known as tocopherol, was isolated in the 1920s. The average American diet contains between 10 and 22 international units of vitamin E. Most healthy adults should do well with supplementing with 20 to 400 units a few times a week. Very high dosages, such as 1,000 units or more, can lead to a vitamin E overdose.
A vitamin overdose is more of a concern with the fat soluble vitamins - vitamin a, vitamin k and vitamin e - as these are stored in the tissues of the body. The vitamin E overdose may generally show symptoms like pulmonary embolism, hypertension, muscular weakness, severe fatigue, breast tenderness, slow wound healing.
Symptoms of the vitamin E overdose may include abdominal pain, weakness, and nausea. A long-term overdose can also increase your risk of bleeding, which could result in dangerous internal bleeding. The vitamin E overdose may also include impaired sexual functioning, especially if low-dose aspirin or other clot-inhibiting drugs are used. If taken long-term, the vitamin E overdose have been reported to cause some problems, such as: fatigue, weakness, abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea, nausea and headaches.
Treatment for a vitamin E overdose will involve supportive care which consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose. If an overdose caused bleeding, for instance, then supportive treatment would include medications or procedures to stop the bleeding.
It is not known exactly what to expect from a vitamin E overdose, but a vitamin E overdose could theoretically cause serious problems. Therefore, if you happen to the vitamin E overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
