Coumadin diet is a prescription anticoagulant medication. This coumadin works by blocking the formation of ceratin blood clotting factors. One of the downsides of this medication is that it interacts with many different foods and beverages.
Coumadin treats or prevents blood clots that may occur in the veins and lungs. Using the coumadine diet can also reduce the risk of death, recurring heart attack, or blood clotting events (e.g., stroke) after a heart attack.
There are some general dietary guidelines that you should follow while taking Coumadin. Vitamin K, for instance, large amounts of the vitamin K can counteract the benefits of warfarin. So, it is recommended that you not consume too much vitamin K, but overall, there are no foods that must absolutely be avoided with a Coumadin diet. The average recommended daily allowance of vitamin K for adult men is 120 micrograms (mcg). For adult women, it’s 90 mcg.
It is now understood that eating a consistent diet is more important. While there is no specific diet for people taking Coumadin, there are general guidelines that should be followed to help improve the safety of the medication. Even though there is no specific warfarin or Coumadin diet, certain foods and beverages can impair the effect of warfarin. For this reason, it’s important to pay attention to what you eat while taking this medication.
Millions of Americans take the coumadin diet as an anticoagulant to treat blood clots. These clots may be in the legs or lungs or may be associated with an irregular heartbeat (known as “atrial fibrillation”) or heart-valve replacement.
It is important to eat a consistent diet during treatment because sudden changes can lead to dangerous problems. The effectiveness of Coumadin diet must be monitored by your doctor through blood tests. This blood tests is also called as a PT Test, or prothrombin time. It measures the tendency of your blood to clot.
